Animal Farm

It was cloudy in the valley and we thought we could get above the clouds by driving up to the Col de Soulor. At 1474m it was still thick and foggy, so we continued along the very narrow road to the Col d’Aubisque (1709m) overtaking numerous Dutch cyclists.
Suddenly there was a clearing in the fog and we saw a sign saying “Vente de Fromage” on a building perched on the edge of the road. We parked the car and, before going in, I stroked a huge white Pyrenean mountain dog lying in the road, amongst the cow pats, together with its smaller puppy. It did not move.
Inside a bare room smelling very strongly of cheese was the Fermière, wearing an apron and white rubber boots. In the same room was a table with three cheeses on it and thousands of flies. I went outside quite quickly! The dog was still lying in the same position and some cyclists were riding round it. I called out to them “c’est sa route”! They agreed with a smile!
Two pigs appeared and soon they were happily putting their snouts in the cow pats on the road.
Christiane came out and we started to leave, but the puppy was sitting directly in front of our car and she had to get out to move it. By then there was a cow in the middle of the road ahead of us, which two cars were trying to pass, but it would not move! It is a family joke, but nevertheless true, that Pyrenean cows don’t move, so we started laughing! The first car tried to move forward and gently nudged the side of the cow. Completely unperturbed it turned its head and started to lick the car’s bonnet. By now we were both laughing our socks off!
The lady driver of the second car decided to act. She got out of her car, approached the cow and started clapping and shouting. Reluctantly the cow moved across the road and the first car went through, its male driver looking embarrassed.
By the time the lady was ready to leave two more cows had occupied the road, and in the rear view mirror I could see that the pigs were watching with interest. I could almost hear them saying to each other “it’s our road. We live here! We should express our solidarity and support the cows in their protest”!
Still laughing, we watched the lady driver get out of her car again and move the two cows. We could now both drive on. As we passed I wound the window down and shouted “C’était très bien fait, mais attention aux cochons”! She shrugged not understanding the joke.
As we left the farm, and I watched her drive around the dog and the pigs in the rear view mirror, the fog closed in again hiding the scene.
